Seventeen-year-old Tessa McCaide has come a long way since her abrupt entrance into the world of werewolves, but she still has just as far to go before she’s comfortable with turning full wolf. In the meantime, she’s avoiding the topic of shifting to four legs any way she can. Thankfully her mate, Dastien Laurent, is quite the distraction.

When she finds her best friend, Meredith, getting sick in the bathroom, Tessa knows something’s majorly wrong. Meredith was cursed years ago, and the dark magic kept her wolf dormant—only now the wolf is awake, and that same spell is killing her.

Tessa has no intention of sitting around while Meredith wastes away. Even if it means playing with magic she doesn’t understand, she’ll do anything to save Meredith’s life. Including bargaining with the local coven of witches and its crazed leader, whose only goal is getting Tessa to join the witchy ranks.
Can Tessa save her friend without losing herself?

4 Stars

Avoiding Alpha was a quick and interesting follow up to Becoming Alpha. Tessa and Dastien are preparing for their upcoming Tribunal, Tessa’s birthday, and the full moon. But suddenly Meredith gets super sick. Werewolves don’t get sick. Ever. It turns out that her wolf has been agitated and is now fighting against the curse that keeps her from shifting. Tessa can’t just sit by while her friend is dying, especially when it was her family who put the curse on her in the first place. Now, it’s time to face the head of her coven to reverse the curse, or learn to use her own bruja magic, which might make things worse.

I really enjoyed Avoiding Alpha. At first it seemed like a novella that was just focused on Meredith and breaking her curse. But it really wound up being about Tessa finally embracing her two halves and settling into herself. She’s been fighting her transformation for weeks now, but she has to change soon or she’ll never get under control. On the other hand, she has all of this magic, but no idea how to use it. She can’t go to her coven without losing her wolf, but she also can’t learn how to hone her abilities without guidance. Saving Meredith was the perfect way for her to learn what she’s capable of, but it also caused some complications with her coven, which I’m excited to see how that all plays out.

Avoiding Alpha was pretty great. I was never bored as Tessa does everything she can to try to save her friend. She learned a lot more about her powers as an alpha wolf, and also started to get a hold of her bruja powers. There’s also a bit more romance here. She and Dastien are kind of sickeningly sweet! It was feeling more insta-lovey this time, but I like said in my review for the first book, there are reasons! But the two have a lot more trials to face, and I can’t wait!

Life has been crazy since Tessa McCaide moved to Texas. She’s gone from being a normal-ish girl with visions to a super-powered werewolf. She’s fought off vampires and broken a nearly unbreakable curse. And she’s got a hot mate, Dastien Laurent, to keep her busy.

Things are looking up until the full moon ceremony rolls around. Before Tessa can strengthen her bond with Dastien, the local coven crashes the gates, demanding that Tessa—their heir apparent—be returned. If the pack wants to avoid a war with the witches, handing Tessa over is the only option.

Tessa doesn’t want to cause an all-out fight, but joining a dark-magic coven isn’t on her to-do list, especially if embracing her magic side means parting with Dastien. When the coven leader tries to control Tessa with dark-magic, Tessa realizes she has to dismantle the coven or prepare the pack for war. Either choice will change her life—and her world—forever.

This series just got intense! Alpha Divided picks up two days after the ending of Avoiding Alpha. Tessa is celebrating her birthday with friends and family, but she also has her mating ceremony that night. Of course, it has to be interrupted, throwing a wrench in the wolves’ plan to have Tessa and Dastien officially mated before their tribunal. The interruption is by none other than, Luciana, head of the local witches coven, because she wants Tessa. To avoid a war, the pack and Tessa agree to one month where Tessa will live at the compound and learn about her magic. One month is one month too long in enemy territory.

I totally expected Luciana to pull something dirty in Alpha Divided. I highly suspected she’d do something underhanded to cause Tessa to flee before her time was up, but still be able to play the victim and then start that war that she desperately wants. Well, I did not expect her to do what she did! That is just straight up dark and evil! But I really liked how Luciana wasn’t a stereotypical villain who is blind to everything except for their plan. Things happen and it gives the wolves more time. How much time is anyone’s guess though.

I am really enjoying this series so far and Alpha Divided was no exception! I love learning about Tessa’s abilities along side with her. Some of them feel like a curse rather than a gift, but that’s just because she doesn’t know exactly how they work or how to control them (if she even can). The romance is getting a bit steamier, too! Of course, with all of this talk and planning on a mating ceremony, other types of mating have to be discussed; if you catch my meaning. But I’ll have to wait to see how that all plays out, since Bruja is going to be about Claudia’s epic adventure!

Claudia De Santos has always looked out for every witch but herself. She fought from the shadows as her coven turned dark, and with a little help from her half witch/half alpha werewolf cousin, Tessa, Claudia is doing everything she can to keep her friends and family in the light.

Now the coven has splintered into two factions: Luciana’s army of witches wielding dark magic, and Claudia’s few stragglers who fight with the wolves. War is coming, and it won’t be much of a battle if Claudia can’t find the spells to counteract Luciana’s demonic power.

The answers lie in ancient magic, and Claudia must journey to Peru to rediscover what the Inca mages knew. Fighting evil will require a pure spirit, but her quest is full of temptations, including a handsome Peruvian guide with secrets of his own.

As she struggles to gain the knowledge her friends will need in the coming battle, conflict rages in Claudia’s heart. Following through with her arranged marriage could bring hope and more allies to the side of good, but at the cost of her own happiness. Should Claudia stay on the same path of duty she’s always walked or risk it all—her life and the futures of all brujos—for a chance at something more?

4 Stars

As much as I enjoy the special school setting, it was exciting to get out of there and visit somewhere I’ve never been: Peru! In Bruja, we’re in Tessa’s cousin Claudia’s head as she heads to South America to find the long lost white mages. She needs their magic to help her coven as well as the wolves who have joined forces with them. Then when Luciana raises a demon and it bites her twin brother, it’s a race against the clock as Claudia flies out, hikes mountains, trudges through forest, and faces black mages all to find the magic and cure she needs.

I really liked Bruja! I couldn’t put it down! It’s not particularly fast paced and exciting, but it always held my interest. My only (minor) complaint is that everything felt too easy. Claudia is a very powerful witch, which is why she’s the one on this quest, so she can basically use magic to do whatever she needs done. She just says a few rhyming lines, and POOF, done. This took away some of the excitement, since you know it’s all going to work out. But I did like seeing what Claudia could do after just being told that she’s powerful for the last couple of books.

Of course, there is also a romance in Bruja. Claudia has actually been promised to this jerkwad, Matt, from another coven. There’s no love there at all, and he just wants her for her powers (much like her aunt). But when Claudia arrives in Peru, she’s immediately drawn to a sexy wolf named Lucas! I’m sure I don’t need to tell you what happens next. 😉

Bruja wasn’t another great installment to this series. It looks like everything is on track for the stray coven members and wolves to fight back against Luciana when the time comes. The ending also left me wanting another Claudia book! Or maybe even a novella about Claudia and Lucas’ travels when all of this is over!

Tessa McCaide has had it up to here with supernaturals. As the only half witch/half alpha werewolf around, she’s the obvious choice for ambassador to the humans when the magical communities seek to escape the shadows for good.

But coming out isn’t as easy as sending a press release. Vampire attacks are all over the news as the power-hungry witches play with dangerously dark magic and Tessa can’t promise any human safety when she and her friends are so busy battling for their lives.

Luciana leads the corrupt witches, and even though she failed to steal Tessa’s magic, she’s just getting started on her crusade for magical domination. Countless covens are turning dark, and if their demonic summoning isn’t stopped, it could mean the end of everything.

Tessa’s allies, including her mate Dastien, are ready to fight, but they’re no match for Luciana’s power. A little help (and ancient Inca mojo) from Tessa’s cousin, Claudia, may give the side of good a chance if she can make it home in time, but stopping the war is no longer an option.

When witches and wolves fight, no one wins. Only time will tell who will still be standing after the last spell is cast.

Alpha Unleashed is very likely my favorite of the series. There’s so much happening! The first third or so takes place concurrently with Bruja, so we get to see what was happening back at the compound. Nothing is as it should be. Tessa can’t feel some of her packmates in the pack bond anymore, wolves are fighting with each other, and she keeps having these moments where she can’t wake up, but isn’t exactly having a nightmare. And all of this is happening while Luciana is still out there, plotting who knows what. At least until her entire coven turns up dead, and there’s no way to cover that up from the humans.

Alpha Unleashed is really nonstop action and madness. Obviously Luciana is gearing up for something huge, but I honestly didn’t expect her to do what she did in order to set that up. It was beyond anything she had done up until that point, and for a moment I honestly thought there’d be a magical solution to it. But then as the story moved forward, it was clear that that was not the case. Tessa, the wolves, witches, and Cosette were not ready for that at all. I still definitely had hope that everything would work out!

I would be really happy with Alpha Unleashed as an ending to this series. Nearly everything was nicely resolved, and what’s left open, I could probably live with not knowing (but I do want to know what’s up with Cosette?!?!). I’m certainly not opposed to more though!
