The night is not safe for mortals.

Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows – her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield – and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s dark past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness – and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who craves a taste of her.

He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human – even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the demon nightmare together…

Because once the first drop of crimson falls, they will both be lost.

4 Stars

First Drop of Crimson starts a few months after Destined for an Early Grave, so I would recommend reading that one first as there are spoilers. It’s not 100% necessary, although I would definitely say read to One Grave at a Time at least, to get the background. Denise is still in mourning over her husband, but she’s trying to go on to live a normal human life. Unfortunately, a demon shows up at her door, brands her, and demands that she bring him a older family member that skipped out on a deal. Denise doesn’t know what to do, so she calls the one vampire who may be able to help her.

I really enjoyed First Drop of Crimson! It’s a fake relationship turned real! Well, kind of. Spade agrees to help Denise track down Nathaniel, but to avoid suspicion she must post as his property as everyone knows that he doesn’t date humans. However, that plan quickly fails and they have to pretend to be a real couple, despite Denise’s repulsion by all things supernatural. Obviously, both of them have to get over their prejudices and fall madly in love, because duh! I loved watching that happen.

The plot was also pretty good. I certainly never got bored with it and really liked learning about more supernatural beings that inhabit this world. It was also fun to see Cat and Bones as support characters rather than the stars. Of course, the outcome of First Drop of Crimson was quite predictable. There’s only one way that Denise and Spade could have stayed together forever, but I was okay with that. I’m certainly looking forward to them appearing in future books.

An immortal war has been brewing in the darkness . . . And now one woman has stumbled into the shadows.

Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling should have just kept on walking. But her sense of duty refused to let her ignore the moans of pain coming from inside a warehouse just before dawn. Suddenly she finds herself in a world she's only imagined in her worst nightmares.

At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master vampire who thought he'd seen it all. Then Kira appears, this fearless, beautiful . . . human who braved death to rescue him. Though he burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life. Yet sending her away is unthinkable.

But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.

4 Stars

Just like the previous book, I would recommend reading Eternal Kiss of Darkness after Destined For An Early Grave, as there are some spoilers included. But if you just want to jump into Mencheres and Kira’s story, you can since previous events are briefly recapped so you get all of the important bits. Like why Mencheres is out to get himself killed, causing Kira to find him, rescue him, and get tangled up in the dangerous world of vampires.

I really enjoyed Eternal Kiss of Darkness! I’ve found Mencheres interesting since we first met him in the main Night Huntress books, so it was great getting to know him better. I also really liked Kira. She’s a private investigator after trying to become a cop didn’t work out. However, she still works hard to save lives when she can, which is why she couldn’t ignore Mencheres’ screams that fateful night. I liked how level-headed and believable she was when he essentially took her captive. She knew it was wrong, but she also knew that she couldn’t go on with this supernatural knowledge and live a normal life. Obviously, she’s going to have to though.

The plot of Eternal Kiss of Darkness was fast paced, fun, and exciting. There’s a lot going on here! Mencheres is still convinced that he’s destined to die soon, but he can’t leave this world without making sure that Kira is safe after she risked her life for his. He also has to make sure that his vampires and others under his protection are well taken care of (cue some cameos from Cat and Bones!). And most importantly, he needs to take out Radje: the crooked vampire law enforcer who is holding a centuries old grudge.

In the end, Eternal Kiss of Darkness was a great read. I’m loving getting to know the side character’s stories and seeing what else is happening in this world away from Cat and Bones, and yet still being fully connected.
