WHEN A MASKED MAN . . .
Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disguised as the Ghost of St. Giles, he prowls the grim alleys of St. Giles, ever on the hunt for the murderer. One night he finds a fiery woman who meets him toe-to-toe—and won't back down . . .
MEETS HIS MATCH . . .
Artemis Greaves toils as a lady's companion, but hiding beneath the plain brown serge of her dress is the heart of a huntress. When the Ghost of St. Giles rescues her from footpads, she recognizes a kindred spirit-and is intrigued. She's even more intrigued when she realizes who exactly the notorious Ghost is by day . . .
DESIRE IGNITES A DANGEROUS PASSION
Artemis makes a bold move: she demands that Maximus use his influence to free her imprisoned brother-or she will expose him as the Ghost. But blackmailing a powerful duke isn't without risks. Now that she has the tiger by the tail, can she withstand his ire-or the temptation of his embrace?
One does not simply blackmail the Ghost of St. Giles, which Artemis learns early on in Duke of Midnight. It’s better to fall in love with him. All Artemis wants is her twin brother freed from Bedlam. He’s been there for four years for a triple homicide which he didn’t commit. After a run in with the Ghost, Artemis quickly figures out that he’s really Maximus, the Duke of Wakefield. She threatens to spill his secret if he doesn’t use his power to help her. But Maximus doesn’t take kindly to demands.
Duke of Midnight is probably my second favorite of the series thus far. I loved Artemis and Maximus, both separately and as a couple. I became fully invested in the suspense plot, and that final page left me dying to know more! Of course, it also helped that Maximus’ version of the Ghost of St. Giles reminded me a lot of Batman. He witnesses his parents’ murder as a teenager, and from there he started training to fight back and avenge them. He’s finally tracks down the man who murdered them after nearly twenty years. At least, he thought he did until he also tracked down the final emerald from his mother’s necklace.
The romance portion of Duke of Midnight was sexy and heartbreaking! Artemis is her cousin Penelope’s lady’s companion and doesn’t expect to ever get married. Maximus is looking for the perfect bride to help him rule his dukedom. That happens to be Penelope, even if he can’t image himself ever conversing with her. Obviously, nothing happens with Penelope because Artemis is all that he can think about. Not just because she knows his darkest secret and tried to blackmail him with it. Their scenes together are all jam packed with tension and emotion! I almost cried at one point!
Duke of Midnight was a really great addition to this series. It has a similar dark tone to Wicked Intentions which I really enjoyed. We also got to know several more of the residents quite well. I found myself eager to get to their books. I am hoping there’s at least one more Ghost of St. Giles…
